The second in the Ash-Tree Press series of Wakefield’s supernatural fiction is his 1929 collection, Old Man’s Beard. This book, published only a year after They Return at Evening, cemented Wakefield’s reputation as the heir to M.R. James. However, such stories as ’Look Up There!’, ‘Blind Man’s Buff’, ‘The Cairn’, and the title story, confirm that Wakefield was more than just a copy of James: his was a new and different voice in the world of the supernatural story. The volume is introduced by Barbara Roden, and the jacket illustration is by Paul Lowe.
